My good friend Bianca recently visited me for a weekend. I’ve told her all about my ImpulseSave adventures and talked about all my blog posts, especially because she’s a blogger herself. Although hers is a baking blog, she surprised me with a few quirky, frugal and fun things that she does, and I thought they were so creative that they should be shared with all of you! So let’s get started.
1. Make oatmeal in the peanut butter jar: I’ve never tried oatmeal and peanut butter before, and when Bianca told me about this, I was a bit surprised that I hadn’t thought of it sooner.
Not only does it sound delicious and makes for a good vegan breakfast, but it’s also fun way to be frugal! Just take a jar of peanut butter that is almost empty (you know, when it’s at the point that you would throw it away, even though there’s still some peanut butter on the sides) and use it as your oatmeal bowl. This way, you don’t miss out on those last bits of peanut butter and it’s one less bowl you have to clean!
It sounds pretty simple enough, but if you’d like, here’s a handy recipe from About.com.
2. Get the most out of pretzel salt: Do you enjoy feasting on pretzels for snack? Do you also need some salt for that delicious dish you’re making? Just take the excess salt at the bottom of the pretzel bag and you’re all set!
3. Use a spray bottle for vegetable oil: Whether you buy it in the spray bottle already or have an extra on hand, using a spray bottle will help you use less oil than you do with the push-top bottle. Instead of pushing the button and spraying to your heart’s content, squirting the spray bottle a few times will help you get the most out of your vegetable oil and prevent you from needing to buy another bottle sooner.
If you need one to start you off, check out this $2 bottle from Amazon!
4. Shower cap your leftovers: I find this idea incredibly amusing. If you’re staying in a hotel that provides decent shower caps, go on and snag some for yourself. Then when you have leftovers, just place the shower cap over your plate and put the plate in the fridge - instant food cover!
