Stains. Ugh. No matter when they strike, it’s always annoying. As a college student with limited funds, I need to get the most out of my clothes by keeping them in good condition and stain-free for as long as possible, and there’s a whole boatload of products out there that can help me do it. But why should I go blow my college spending money on new cleaning products when I can save some money using products I already have that are just as effective? By using these tips, we’ll all be fighting stains and saving money in no time.
1. Soap: If you’re a fan of pre-washing, have I got a tip for you! I love this creative way to save money from College Fashion: you know when your bar of soap is too tiny to use but you still feel bad tossing it? Well, keep those leftover soaps, throw them into cheap pantyhose, and add some warm water, and you’ve got yourself a pre-wash and a good way to save money!
2. Hydrogen peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide doesn’t only disinfect scrapes: as College Fashion again notes, it’s also pretty good at removing stains of the cocktail, wine or sweat variety.
3. Washing soda: Okay, maybe washing soda isn’t a common household product; however, it’s made out of one: baking soda. All you do is put some baking soda in a pan, stick it in the oven, and heat it at 400 degrees until it’s grainy and opaque. The grainy product is the washing soda and can be used to get rid of oil, alcohol and grease stains.
4. Coke: I kid you not. There are many surprising uses for Coke, one of them being its application to help rid of blood and grease stains as a fun way to save money.
5. Salt + Water: What do you get when you add 3 tablespoons of salt with 500 ml of water? A sweat stain remover. Frugal and simple indeed!
6. Lemons: Iodine can also be used to clean scrapes, so if your clothes are stained with iodine, I feel bad for you since that means you’re hurt and stained! After taking care of your injured self, grab a lemon wedge and rub it on the stain to help it disappear.
