Mother, May I? - April Savings Update and May Goal

April Savings Brought $1,013.43

You may remember my savings goal from last month, #aprilsavings. I vowed to “save the date,” saving the amount equal to each day’s date for the month of April. I started out very faithfully: saving everyday, and getting encouraging tweets and comments back from other ImpulseSavers!

Then as the month went on, I’ll admit: I sort of slipped a little. During the week, I had no problem remembering to save (most days). However, on the weekend (and who doesn’t forget about saving money on the weekend?) I forgot to make my savings a priority.

Nevertheless, throughout the whole month I saved $428 in total (that’s including some bonus impulse saves I made when I was out and about), allowing me to cross the finish line on my Student Loan #1 goal!

Thus, I will proudly be writing a $1,000.00 check very soon, bringing down my total balance on my student loans, as well as the interest I will have to pay over the years! I can't even tell you how amazing it is to have 1k saved up towards this goal. It seemed so impossible, I never thought I would be able to do it - but now that I'm here, I can see how easy it really was. I am one happy post-grad!

And As For May...

So now it is May, and I need a new savings goal, because saving money is just too much fun! I wanted this goal to be more exciting than the boring old student loan milestone, but I had a tough time choosing something truly rewarding, since I had been saving for college or loans ever since I can remember!

I decided that one thing that would really make me happy is a new bathing suit. And with summer just around the corner - now is the perfect time to save up for that perfect summer uniform.

May Savings Game

My savings game for this month will be called “Mother, may I?” (as in, “Mother, may I go out and buy myself a new bathing suit?”). Here’s the thing: I really want this new suit, and I also would like to be healthy and fit when I wear it, so in order to accomplish both of these goals, I’ve devised a master plan.

I’m going to encourage myself to stay healthy with savings every time I skip dessert, candy, or an extra portion I know I don’t need.

Here’s how I’ll break down the savings:

$2.00 for skipping candy

$3.00 for saying no to a second serving

$4.00 for avoiding dessert

I’ll also be autosaving $8/week so I can get in the water even faster! This will also give me a whole month to pick out the perfect suit, so I don't spend money on some impulse buy without really thinking it through.

Why I Hate Diets (but this isn’t one!)

I really love this idea for me because it’s not just some diet or way to make myself hate life (which is what I feel like diets do!). Yes, I am technically “depriving myself” of a sweet treat. However, I am also getting something great in return - a very encouraging message from ImpulseSave and the knowledge that I will have a brand-new suit at the end!

Diets can be very negative and limiting, but ImpulseSave is positive and limitless! So I’m not really going to be missing out on anything - I’ll just be storing up dollars instead of calories :)

So again, please do encourage me on this venture by commenting or tweeting. And you can also join me (for free, as always!) by signing up for ImpulseSave today!
